Our experts are here to listen, understand your problem, and get you the help you need. Let’s talk.

Why Do I Have Rats?

Rats take advantage of the food, shelter, warmth, and water provided by human activities. Neighborhoods with more restaurants support more rats because their garbage provides a reliable food source. Sewer systems provide rats with all of the water they need to survive. Plants and ground cover allow rats to find shelter near your building, and any gap greater than ½ inch allows rats to come inside.

Because every city has an abundance of rats, our team of experts controls the rat population on or near your property and seals your building with rat-proof materials designed to keep rats from getting inside.

How to Solve a Rat Problem

It’s not enough to just keep killing rats. To solve a rat problem they must be sealed out.

Landmark delivers Chicago’s best rat control. We begin by installing exterior rat control devices to help control the rats that live around your building before they can get inside. We reduce the time it takes to effectively trap rats by installing a comprehensive system tailored to the biology of the rats living inside your building. Most importantly, our structural exclusion experts identify every ½ inch or great hole through which the rats are entering, and seal rats out with rat-proof materials they cannot chew through.

The most important thing is to seal the building to make sure that rats can’t continue to access the building’s interior. The structural exclusion process will begin with an inspection by our team of structural exclusion specialists who will identify vulnerable entry points and then develop a plan to have us seal the rats out. When performed at the same time, the three steps together, exterior control, interior treatment, and sealing the building, provide the best long term results.

We seal up any hole ½ inch or greater that is allowing rats to enter the building. Our structural experts seal buildings just like yours everyday using rodent-proof materials that rats cannot chew through.

How Do I Know I Have a Rat Problem?

Rats leave droppings behind, but there are other clues, too. Here’s how to tell if you have a rat infestation.

  • Rat droppings are black, blunted on the end, and slightly oblong
  • Rat urine leaves behind a musty smell
  • Chewed up paper or cloth are an indication rats are nesting nearby
  • Rats collect bits of insulation for their nests, so finding shredded insulation is a sign of rats
  • Rats travel through the attic and wall voids and they are most active at night. Hearing noises in the attic and walls can be a sign of a rat infestation
  • Holes in your yard, or disturbed soil or mulch might be rat burrows

Keep Rats Out

Fires Caused by Rodents

According to the Illinois Department of Public health, it is estimated that rodents may be responsible for 25 percent of fires attributed to unknown causes.

Since rats prefer to build their nests in warm places, they sometimes carry shredded paper, rags, or other combustible nesting materials to areas on top of heaters and pilot lights, allowing these materials to catch fire. Rats also gnaw on wiring.

Landmark installs rodent monitors that eliminate rats. When rat activity is observed, we respond by identifying how the rats are getting in and by sealing rats out to help protect buildings from the fire hazard caused by rats.

Helping Homeowners Remove Rats Quickly, Repair Rat Damage, and Seal Rats Out Since 1976

Rats spread diseases that can harm people including E. coli, Salmonella, and Leptospirosis. They travel between buildings through the sewer system, tracking pathogens wherever they go. As rats move through your building, they deposit feces and urine throughout. Their urine and feces is another way in which rats transmit disease and cause your building to have a musty rat smell that is embarrassing, unpleasant, and permanent.

Rats cause significant damage very quickly. They use their sharp teeth to gnaw into structures, through walls, wood beams, and wiring. They destroy insulation by compressing it with their tunneling and nesting behavior, and they soil it with their feces and urine. Worst of all, because wires resemble the grasses that rats use in the wild for nesting materials, rats gnaw through wires which can cause a fire. Unless the rats inside are removed and sealed out, significant damage and loss can result.

Landmark’s experts provide the best rat control available to ensure that your home or businesses will be protected from rats and the damage they cause. Our treatments use the science of the way rats live to control their population and keep them out of your home or businesses.

Why Is a Rat Problem Harder to Solve than a Mouse Problem?

Rats exhibit a behavior known as neophobia, which means that they are wary of new objects in their environment. Each rat is an individual with its own routine, habits, and food preferences. Rats avoid traps, baits, and other control measures unless these measures are customized based on the habits of the rats at each site.

Conversely mice exhibit the opposite type of behavior called neophilia, meaning that they are curious about new objects in their environment. This means that mice are much more likely to explore traps and ingest rodenticide baits, leading to a much quicker resolution to an infestation.

When one compares a rat’s aversion to new objects with a mouse’s attraction to new objects, it becomes clear that solving a rat problem requires specialized knowledge, experience and skill to diagnose and solve.

Rats exist as part of a social hierarchy, and they teach their young how to avoid traps, baits, and other control measures. Unless traps and baits are installed in a way that considers rat biology, traps and other tools will not be effective.

Landmark is a team of scientists that specialize in rat control. We identify how rats are entering a structure and then modify their environment to eliminate them. We use the biology of how rats live, breed, and feed to create effective baiting and trapping programs tailored to the behavior of the rats living on your property. Then, we seal rats out using rat-proof materials that they cannot chew through. The result is comprehensive rat control to keep your home, business, and yard safe from rats and the damage they cause.
