Helping Homeowners Humanely Remove Bats and Capture Bats for Rabies Testing Since 1976

Case studies exist in which a person woke up in a room with a bat, wrongly believed they were not bitten, and later died of rabies. For this reason, experts believe that when someone is asleep, they do not always know that a bite occurred. This is why it is essential that any bat found in a room with a sleeping person be submitted for rabies testing.

On-call experts capture bats from the living space of homes and submit bats for rabies testing when needed. This service is available in Chicago and the Chicagoland suburbs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

When bats enter the human-occupied areas of a home, they pose a rabies risk to people and pets. If a person had contact with a bat, or was asleep in a room with a bat, the bat needs to be captured and sent for rabies testing. Whenever a bat is inside of a building, it is important to determine whether the bat could have exposed a person or pet to rabies, and submit the bat for rabies testing if contact cannot be ruled out. Here are examples of scenarios in which the bat needs to be tested for rabies:

  • A person or pet was bitten by a bat
  • A person or pet had physical contact with a bat
  • A person was asleep in a room with a bat
  • A child, an intoxicated person, a person with a cognitive impairment, or anyone who might not be able to assess and report whether contact occurred was in the room with a bat
  • A pet was unsupervised with a bat

Bat Colony Removal and Bat Contamination Remediation

Rabies isn’t the only health hazard associated with bats. When bat feces (guano) accumulates in the attic, the fungal pathogen that causes the fungal lung disease Histoplasmosis can be found growing on the guano. Landmark’s experts remove bats, prevent them from returning, and remediate the contamination bats leave behind.

What Happens When There’s a Bat in My House?

When bats are found in the attic, or other void spaces, Landmark Pest Management installs one-way-doors, called excluders, that allow bats to exit, but not re-enter. Once the bats are out, Landmark permanently seals the entry points so that bats cannot return.

Knowledgeable Staff

Landmark Pest Management is a certified bat exclusion contractor. We have over 40 years of experience in humane bat removal and humane bat colony remediation. The signs that bats leave behind indicating where they are entering a home are easy to overlook to the untrained eye, because signs may be subtle, consisting only of greasy rub marks from the bats fur repeatedly contacting the surfaces around their entry points, a small amount of bat guano below entry points, or contaminated attic insulation where bats roost. Landmark’s bat control experts are trained to identify the signs that bats leave behind, and are experts at sealing bats out.

Scientific Techniques

Bats are an ecologically important species and they are protected by law. Removing bats without harming them is an essential part of any bat removal project. Because bats are protected and cannot be trapped or killed, our bat experts use one-way doors that allow the bats to leave for good without harming them.

Comprehensive Service

Once the bats are gone, the next step is to remove the contamination they leave behind. Contaminated attic insulation is replaced with new, fresh insulation, and vulnerable areas are sealed to prevent bats from entering.

Why Do I Have Bats?

Bats enter homes through holes as small as a dime. They roost in attics, under flashing, and within inaccessible wall voids. Sometimes bats enter the bedroom or human-occupied areas of the home, and this is dangerous because bats carry rabies.

Bats are common in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. While every town in Illinois has bats, they are more common in forested areas and around bodies of water. The towns where bats most often enter houses are Naperville, Evanston, Barrington, Glendale Heights, Carol Stream, Kenilworth, Glencoe, Winnetka, River Forest, Hinsdale, Western Springs, and Oak Brook.

They’re looking for shelter. They’re looking for warmth. They’re looking at your home, no matter where you live.
